#104 - Compound your habits WISELY

What one human can do, another human can also do. Habits are the tools that humans use to weave the cloth into a beautiful tapestry or a dirty rag. When we look at athletes, we are rendered speechless by their talents and appearances, for example, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Phelps, Usain Bolt, Cristiano Ronaldo, or Michael Jordan. Champions don’t do extraordinary things. They do ordinary things, but they do them without thinking, too fast for the competitors react. They follow the habits that they have practised. But what most people don’t see is the day in day out training.

There were things that I thought I can never do until I tried to do them. Yes, at the start I failed many many times but with practice, I did succeed. Because I cultivated the skills through habit.

  • When first learning to drive, I struggled, made tons of mistakes but I kept going and eventually I learned to drive.

  • When I was first learning to program, I struggled. My brain melted through my ears on most days but I kept going and eventually I learned to program. I achieved distinction in all programming assignments at University

  • When I was first learning to play table tennis, I struggled to hit the ball back over the net but I kept going and practising, eventually, I learned to play.

Now I am not saying that I am the best driver, programmer, or table tennis player but I know if this was an area which I wanted to master, all I need to do is practice. William James said 90% of results in life are a direct result of your habits. It is because the human mind can consciously only focus on so many things, so with the rest of the information it must create a habit and place the routine on autopilot.

"All our life is but a mass of habits.”

William James

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.” Sobering words from Aristotle, and an astute reminder that success doesn’t come overnight. On the contrary, it’s discipline that gets you from Point A to the often-elusive Point B. In our day-to-day lives, habits can often be tough to build, as there are plenty of distractions that can lead us off the “straight and narrow” and right back to our old ways.

I have attached a link to excel spreadsheet which I use to track and monitor my morning and evening habits. Along with my Dietary habits. What we do day in day out, compounds over time and dictates our life so take control of your habits.

Compound interest. Compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world. He who understands it, earns it ... he who doesn't ... pays it.Compound interest is the most powerful force in the universe.

Albert Einstein
