#20 - Why you should MEDITATE?

“Life is a mystery – mystery of beauty, bliss, and divinity. Meditation is the art of unfolding that mystery. – Amit Ray”

Meditation can also help us to understand our own mind. We can learn how to transform our mind from negative to positive, from disturbed to peaceful, from unhappy to happy. Many people suffer from negativity within their mind and this is often a result of not being ‘present to the moment’. What is meant by this is that we dwell on the past or worry about the future rather than focusing on the here and now.

“If you are depressed you are living in the past.

If you are anxious you are living in the future.

If you are at peace you are living in the present.”

Lao Tzu

Meditation trains you to remain focused and undisturbed by thoughts by letting them come and go. For me, meditation starts the day off to a great start and puts me in an nonreactive, level headed state of mind. It can also be done at the end of a long, stressful day and can act as a ‘reset’ switch for your brain. Meditation has many benefits however most of the people are not aware of all the benefits. Below are some of the benefits of mediation in different areas.

On a physical level, meditation:

  • Lowers high blood pressure

  • Lowers the levels of blood lactate, reducing anxiety attacks

  • Decreases any tension-related pain, such as tension headaches, ulcers, insomnia, muscle and joint problems

  • Increases serotonin production that improves mood and behavior

  • Improves the immune system

  • Increases the energy level, as you gain an inner source of energy

Spiritual benefits of meditation

Meditation doesn’t have a religion and can be practiced by anybody regardless of the faith they follow.

  • Effortless transition from being something to merging with the infinite and recognizing yourself as an inseparable part of the whole cosmos

  • In a meditative state, you are in a space of vastness, calmness, and joy and this is what you emit into the environment, bringing harmony to the Creation/planet.

  • Meditation can bring about a true personal transformation. As you learn more about yourself, you’ll naturally start discovering more about yourself.

Mental Benefits of Meditation

It has been scientifically proven that Meditation brings the brainwave pattern into an alpha state that promotes healing. With regular meditation, your mind becomes fresh, delicate and beautiful. It cleanses and nourishes you from within and calms you, whenever you feel overwhelmed, unstable, or emotionally shut down. To list some of the key mental benefits of mediation

  • The balance of a sharp mind and an expanded consciousness brings perfection

  • Intuition develops

  • Gain clarity and peace of mind

  • Problems become smaller

  • Meditation sharpens the mind by gaining focus and expands through relaxation

  • A sharp mind without expansion causes tension, anger, and frustration

  • An expanded consciousness without sharpness can lead to lack of action/progress

  • Emotional stability improves

  • Anxiety decreases

  • Happiness increases

  • Creativity increases

I have understood in my journey so far that Meditation makes you aware that your inner attitude determines your happiness. This is life changing epiphany because I am aware that I can change my attitude which changes the whole situation/story. If you are student reading this, I would highly encourage and recommended mediation.  It provides so many Benefits. I started meditating when I was a student at Birmingham city university. It completely changed my mind. I was less stressed about exams, interviews, deadline or coursework. I graduated with a 1class degree. Some of the key benefits are …

  • Greater confidence

  • More focus and clarity

  • Better health

  • More mental strength and energy

  • Greater dynamism
